The Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) training and subsequent certificate is mandatory throughout Queensland for all hospitality and retail staff that are involved in the sale or service of alcohol. The course Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol (SITHFAB009A) is delivered by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), either online or in a face-to-face training session.
For the RSA training to be valid in Queensland the RTO that delivers the course must be accredited by Queensland’s Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing (OLGR). The OLGR must approve an RTO before the training organisation is able to provide the QLD RSA certificate. OLGR and the Federal Government’s National Training Information Service (NTIS) maintain a public list of all RTOs accredited to deliver the Queensland RSA training.
Upon completion of your Queensland RSA training you will receive the QLD RSA certificate, accredited by OLGR, and a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol (SITHFAB009A) unit.
The Statement of Attainment is recognised as an RSA certificate in Western Australia and the Northern Territory, even when it was obtained in Queensland. It is also recognised, in part, in Victoria – with the additional completion of Victoria’s Director of Licensing’s free, online refresher course. In South Australia you can also accredit this Statement of Attainment toward your Approved Responsible Person qualification, the State’s RSA requirement for managers and supervisors of licensed venues.
In New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania, the stipulation that individual liquor authorities have approved the RTO before it’s authorised to deliver their state or territory RSA training also applies – like in Queensland.
The RSA training delivers: How to responsibly serve alcoholic beverages, how to responsibly prepare alcoholic beverages, how to encourage responsible alcohol consumption at licensed venues, how to assist someone under the influence and when it is appropriate to refuse service. In addition to being a mandatory requirement, the course also divulges safe practice and best practice for those employed in the industry.
The training can take place online or in person. Online the training takes three hours to finalise and in person it can take between three and six hours to complete. Both delivery methods contain exactly the same course content and modules.
The online course will suit those new to the industry, with its fast paced and self directed attributes – i.e. you won’t have to miss a day at your new job to complete the mandatory training, you have the option to complete it in segments during your down time. These benefits also apply to the time poor that are in need of the RSA certificate. In person classes will suit those who prefer the traditional classroom setting, in comparison to online, and like having an in person trainer present.
